Context

Heineken Peru observed a growing preference among younger consumers for ready-to-drink beverages and hard seltzers. Competitors such as Mike's and Four Loko were gaining traction, leading internal stakeholders to explore the launch of a hard seltzer as a way to participate in the trend. The initial challenge was to develop a product concept that would allow Heineken to compete in this emerging category.

Objective

Understand the drivers behind changing consumption patterns among younger consumers. Evaluate the opportunity beyond category growth data. Define an appropriate strategic response for the portfolio.

My Contribution

Conducted social listening and qualitative research. Performed market audits and competitive analysis. Interviewed consumers and sales personnel. Identified the underlying motivations driving category adoption. Reframed the strategic challenge from category participation to need fulfillment. Co-developed strategic recommendations with the brand team. Contributed to target audience definition and communication strategy.

Process

Review of sales and category performance data. Social listening analysis. Consumer interviews. Sales team interviews. Strategic synthesis workshops with the brand team. Product and portfolio evaluation. Brand architecture assessment.

Key Insights

Category growth alone did not explain changing behavior. Young consumers had not abandoned beer as a category. The appeal of hard seltzers and RTDs was linked to speed, intensity, and convenience of consumption. Younger audiences increasingly sought immediate and amplified experiences. The underlying need could potentially be addressed within the existing beer portfolio.

Outcomes

Strategic recommendation adopted by the client. Led to the development of Tres Cruces Pum Pum (6% ABV). Expanded the Tres Cruces portfolio beyond its existing lager and light variants. The product remains part of the portfolio. Reinforced an existing brand instead of creating a new standalone proposition.

Key Learnings

Trend data becomes more valuable when combined with behavioral understanding. Category growth does not always require category entry. Understanding motivations can reveal more efficient strategic responses. Research can redefine the problem, not just validate assumptions.

Strategic Approach

I combined social listening, market audits, consumer interviews, and conversations with sales teams to move beyond category performance data and understand the behavioral drivers behind the trend. Findings were synthesized and discussed through collaborative working sessions with the brand team. Rather than focusing exclusively on category entry, the process explored how consumer needs could be addressed through product, portfolio, and brand strategy decisions.

Strategy

Research revealed that the opportunity was not necessarily to compete as a hard-seltzer brand, but to address the underlying need driving category adoption. Together with the brand team, we reframed the challenge from launching a new category offering to strengthening the existing portfolio. The recommendation was to develop a product extension under an established local brand, allowing Heineken to respond to emerging consumption behaviors while building on existing brand equity. I also contributed to defining the target audience and communication approach for the new proposition.
