Context

As an official FIFA World Cup sponsor, Coca-Cola sought to maximize visibility and consumption throughout the tournament. The campaign covered Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, Chile, Bolivia, and Peru, and extended beyond the competition itself to include activities such as the FIFA World Cup Trophy Tour, promotional campaigns, and branded content initiatives. The challenge was to remain relevant during a highly competitive media environment where multiple sponsors were competing for consumer attention.

Objective

Increase brand visibility during the World Cup. Strengthen Coca-Cola's role in fan rituals and celebrations. Drive product consumption during key tournament moments. Optimize campaign performance through data-driven decision making.

My Contribution

Led regional digital marketing and customer experience strategy. Defined audience segmentation approaches. Developed content strategy. Monitored campaign performance across six countries. Identified optimization opportunities through analytics and social listening. Co-designed A/B testing initiatives with media partners. Managed stakeholder alignment across regional teams.

Process

Campaign strategy development. Audience segmentation. Campaign monitoring and reporting. Social listening analysis. Identification of fan behaviors and pain points. A/B testing of creatives and targeting approaches. Continuous optimization based on performance data. Coordination with local execution teams and media agencies.

Key Insights

Many matches took place at inconvenient times for Latin American audiences. Fans struggled to balance work, daily responsibilities, and tournament viewing. Preparing for matches often required advance planning and product purchases. The moments immediately before games represented an opportunity for brand relevance. Convenience and availability could strengthen Coca-Cola's role within match-day rituals. Fans responded positively to communications that helped them prepare and participate in the World Cup experience.

Outcomes

Continuous optimization through A/B testing improved campaign effectiveness. Coca-Cola strengthened its relevance during key moments of the tournament. According to Comscore, Coca-Cola captured 33.3% of all digital mentions among official FIFA World Cup sponsors in Latin America, making it the most talked-about sponsor in the region. Established an early example of conversion-oriented digital campaign optimization within Coca-Cola's regional marketing efforts.

Key Learnings

Consumer relevance often comes from solving small friction points. Data and experimentation can improve campaign effectiveness throughout execution. Major cultural events create multiple behavioral moments, not just media opportunities. Optimization should be integrated into campaign strategy, not treated as a post-launch activity.

Strategic Approach

While monitoring campaign performance and social conversations, I identified a recurring challenge: many matches took place at inconvenient times for Latin American audiences, making it difficult for fans to prepare and fully engage with the tournament. I used this insight to shape content and activation strategies that positioned Coca-Cola as part of the match-day experience. Through audience segmentation, social listening, campaign monitoring, and A/B testing, we continuously refined messaging and targeting to increase relevance and improve campaign effectiveness across markets.

Strategy

The campaign focused on positioning Coca-Cola as an essential part of the World Cup experience before, during, and after matches. Rather than relying solely on emotional advertising, the strategy incorporated practical solutions that addressed fan needs. Match reminders encouraged consumers to prepare in advance, while targeted promotions helped improve product accessibility during key moments. This combination of emotional relevance and behavioral understanding strengthened the brand's role within match-day rituals while creating opportunities to optimize campaign performance through continuous testing and learning.
